- Road Bank Stabilization - Stream Restoration

- Salt Storage - Sewer Extensions

Salt Storage:

Town of Canandaigua Salt Storage Barn: Based on monitoring data indicating high levels of salt downstream of the Town of Canandaigua's outdoor salt storage area the Town proactively installed an impressive salt storage building. Salt now stored at this facility will not leach into the nearby wetland and Sucker Brook.  See attached file for picture.

The Town of Middlesex was successful in obtaining a state matching grant to build a permanent salt storage facility.  A covered salt storage facility to reduce, by up to 40 tons, the amount of salt runoff to the West River, a major tributary of Canandaigua Lake (classified as AA drinking water supply for more than 50,000 citizens). The construction of this facility (current uncovered location is 152 feet from the West River) along with ongoing highway deicing education programs are listed as high priorities in the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Management Plan and Yates County Water Quality Strategy.

Sewer Extensions:

Laura Lane/Wyfells Road:

Due in large part to the efforts of George Barden, Watershed Inspector, Ontario County received a grant for $419,000 to extend sewers up Wyfells Rd. and Laura Lane. Monthly sampling for Fecal Coliform indicated high levels in Hope Pt., the stream that drains this area. George sampled different stretches of the stream and located a series of failed septic systems. The stream is especially important because it outlets less than 1,000 feet from the City of Canandaigua's intake pipe. Similar grants are being applied for the West Lake Rd extension from Foster Rd to Miller's Nurseries and on north end of Middle Cheshire Rd.
