Watershed Management Plan

Comprehensive Plan ~ Summary Plan

An Evolving Plan:

In 1989, the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Task Force was created to sponsor activities in order to raise awareness and promote protection of the watershed’s valuable resources. In 1994, the Task Force in partnership with various county agencies developed a comprehensive inventory of the current condition of the watershed, potential sources of pollution, along with nearly 100 recommendations to protect the watershed in the future.

From 1995 to 1998 elected leaders from each of the fourteen municipalities came together to weigh each of the recommendations.   After stringent review over 80 recommendations were endorsed and formed a foundation for the Watershed Management Plan.  In 1999 the Plan was completed and visits were made to the fourteen municipalities involved.  After careful consideration all fourteen municipalities made the decision to adopt, fund and implement the Watershed Plan.

“The Plan of Action”

The Watershed Management Plan encompasses a wide spectrum of actions that will help protect the Lake for generations to come.  The following is a brief look at the five main segments of the plan: implementation of the 80 endorsed actions, the testing and sampling program, agricultural “best management practices”, septic system inspections and capital improvement projects.

The Plan provides in specific detail on how, where and when the 80 endorsed actions will be implemented.  Funding will come from the municipalities through the Watershed Council, grants and our lake organization partners.  These actions are focused on reducing pollution from various sources ranging from:

  pesticide use                           forestry

  mined lands                             septic systems

  recreation                               development

  chemical storage                  hazardous waste spills

The Two Plans:

The comprehensive plan is the technical document providing specific detail about the current water quality status, sources of pollution, thirty-four subwatersheds, current land use regulatory environment, each of the plan’s actions and capital improvement projects.  The summary plan reduces this 700 page document down to a much more manageable and user friendly 60 pages.  The main focus of the summary plan is the protective actions along with a process and schedule for plan implementation.
