Stream Restoration

Naples Creek - Menteth Gully

Naples Creek Stream Restoration:

Project Summary:

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Region 8, began an Aquatic Habitat Restoration Project on Naples Creek in the Spring of 2001 in order to enhance habitat for the rainbow trout fishery while maintaining good water quality.  The main habitat disturbances were found to be eroding stream banks, degraded stream beds, and lack of sufficient areas for spawning and food production.

Remediation efforts were focused on these areas of habitat restoration.  Streambank stabilization techniques such as rock rip-rap, repairing log cribs, and willow plantings were installed to curb erosion and resulting habitat destruction.  Repairing bed sills, shoal shaping, willow planting, and debris removal processes were utilized to enhance in-stream spawning and feeding areas.

The benefit of this project will be the restoration of a healthy rainbow trout fishery by increasing habitat and reducing erosion and sediment loading which has a direct and detrimental impact on the trout population.  Along with addressing habitat concerns, this project also may protect and improve valuable surrounding land resources.

On April 12th, 2002 students of the Marcus Whitman Environmental Classroom Opportunities (ECO) program (see class picture) helped plant 3,000 willows as part of a larger effort to stabilize and restore Naples Creek.  DEC received a state grant to undertake the $300,000 restoration project.  Trout Unlimited organized the overall planting effort.  The Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council provided approximately $1,400 to help pay for the willows.

Funding:

Funds for this $470,000 project were distributed by New York State DEC along with a partial match from municipal sources such as the Ontario County Soil and Water Conservation District, Ontario County Public Works, USDA/NRCS, and Village and Town of Naples.  Willow plantings were provided by the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council.

Menteth  Gully Stream Restoration:

Project Summary:

In the winter/spring of 2001 The Town of Canandaigua with assistance from the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council and Ontario County Soil and Water Conservation District undertook a stream clean-up, bank stabilization project for the portion of Menteth Gully that flows through the Hamlet of Cheshire in order to improve flow and reduce erosion.

Components of the project included:

-      remove vegetation and debris within the creek-bed to improve flow and reduce bank erosion

-     hydroseed banks and use rock rip-rap where appropriate to stabilize banks and reduce erosion

-     stabilize creek banks near bridge crossings
